Occupational therapy, as part of the SLIPS, assesses older people who have fallen or are at risk of falls. We assess an individual's ability to carry out activities of daily living independently without risk of or fear of falling. Occupational therapy understands that sometimes as a result of falls or fear of falling, individuals stop doing, or find it more difficult to do some activities of daily living. For example, bathing, mobilising around the home, getting on/off of bed, chair or toilet, cooking, cleaning, shopping, outdoor activities etc.
Our aim is to assist individuals in minimising risk of falls and to live independently in their own home.
We can offer:
- Individual assessments to ascertain needs/ problems for older people who fall.
- Assessment and rehabilitation in personal and domestic activities.
- Prescription of wheelchairs and assessment for postural management.
- Education and advice on coping strategies for falls.
- Education and training on anxiety management with regard to falls.
- Referral onwards for comprehensive occupational therapy rehabilitation regarding problems outside of falls.
- Education and support for carers.
- Advice on leisure pursuits.
- Comprehensive home assessments to establish:
- Ability to manage safely at home.
- Need for adaptive equipment and home modification
- Referral to appropriate community services.
